REVIEW: Chemex Coffeemaker

By no means am I a coffee connoisseur. I’ll have to give that title to my best friend, Megan. But I do like a good brew… or two, on a rough day.

Coffee and I have a complicated relationship. We started out casual acquaintances, then quickly became inseparable companions. Then I did a raw juice cleanse for ten days, and we broke up. I gave up coffee for a good two years. Then something happened..

I got engaged.
I needed to plan a wedding. The stress was overwhelming and I wasn’t sleeping well.

I turned to coffee in my time of need and it welcomed me back with open arms. Now, I’m glad to say coffee and I are good friends again, though we occasionally have a falling out whenever I drink instant against my better judgement.

When I initially saw the Chemex Coffeemaker, I fell in love with its mid-century modern design.

I ended up purchasing the 8-cup Chemex Coffeemaker, along with the pre-folded circular filters and a glass top for good measure. Because I like my coffee cold, and the glass cover boasts that it prevented evaporation while storing and retained the flavor of the coffee between servings, which it does to an extent.

Okay, I know the coffee purist out there are going to be up in arms about this next part, but I have to be honest. I don’t measure the coffee or the water. I just wing it. I’m sure Megan would disapprove, but look.. that’s the beauty of the Chemex! Even novices like me can make a perfect cup of coffee. No bitterness. Less acidity. Perfect every time. Even without measuring, because measuring is for pansies. Just saying.

In terms of the process, it’s quite tedious but well worth the effort. Yes, it takes time and a specific technique… but if it were easy, it wouldn’t produce the same results. So, if you’re having a leisurely Sunday and are in the mood for an exceptional cup of coffee, try out the Chemex. No barista experience necessary.
